What this is

A Rapier rigid-body simulation of products dropping into a carton. Measures where they actually settle, rather than dividing one volume by another.

Carton volume ÷ product volume is wrong by 25–45% for anything round, because it ignores the void space between objects. Dropping the actual solids in and measuring the fill height is how you get a number worth quoting to a 3PL. Run it twice: if two drops disagree by four units, the carton spec is not robust and the packing instructions matter more than the maths.

Things worth trying

  • Compare the spreadsheet estimate against the packed result for bottles
  • Drop friction toward zero — denser packing, worse transit behaviour
  • Re-drop a few times and watch the count move; that variance is the finding
  • Overfill until the outline turns red and the lid stops closing
