What this is

Align two overlapping scans with a genuine ICP solver running in the tab. Watch the residual fall, then check it against ground truth and find out whether the number meant anything.

The solve is point-to-plane, because point-to-point ICP cannot converge below the spacing between samples — two scans of one wall never hit the same physical spot. The demo exists for the corridor case: the solver reports a flawless 6 mm residual while sitting a metre and a half from truth, because every metre of corridor looks like every other. That is why survey crews place control targets.

Things worth trying

  • Run the machine room at 70% overlap — 6 mm residual, millimetres from truth
  • Switch to the plant corridor: same residual, and the cloud has slid a metre down its length
  • Drop overlap below 30% and watch it diverge outright
  • Widen the search radius to survive a rough start, and buy wrong correspondences doing it
